How can sound and image be used together to create meaning in your work?
With sombre background music, it properly sets the tone of the video. One that will contain a more serious subject matter and will delve deeply into that topic expecting full viewer attention. The parts of the music that dip or rise also help to place more emphasis on certain words when they are highlighted simultaneously in the video. The use of both diegetic and non-diegetic sound side by side when cutting between text and real handheld video can create a shocking effect as the viewer is abruptly placed back into reality and forced to look at the real-world consequences of what’s being described, seeing for themselves the places that will be affected by climate change.
How successful was the outcome in relation to the brief?
I felt the outcome was quite successful in relation to the brief. In my video I used both static and moving text, as well as a variety of effects to place emphasis on the typography. A range of camera angles and lighting conditions were used in the various shots I took of the environment, which all achieved different effects in the video. Sound was used to help make the point of the video and set the tone of the content within it. Camera equipment was used, and a detailed plan was made ahead of time to ensure that I had a clear idea of what I needed to do to ensure the video could come together and contingencies were made should anything go wrong.
What aspects of your work were successful and why is this?
The effects placed on the lettering made the video more interesting to watch, and the use of colour alligned with whatever tone a specific sentence or segment of the video was supposed to have.
What aspects of your work were you not happy with and why is this?
I feel the sound from my footage could have been better. A clearer use of sound to capture the noise of the river Thames and the wind would have had made for a better transition and ambience.
What did you find challenging or difficult and why?
Finding good angles for some of the footage was challenging, as well as editing some of the clips together smoothly.
How did your planning work out? Did you stick to your schedule? How might you improve your current methods of planning and time management?
My planning could have worked out better, I was unable too get my footage as soon as I would have liked, so if I were to do something similar again I would make a more appropriate schedule for when I would film.
What knowledge and skills have you gained?
My ability to edit text and use transitions has improved since making this video.
What knowledge and skills might you use again, how?
I'm likely to use cameras and editing software again, and will like be more confident when editing text in future videos that I make, using it for various effects.
Some of the editing footage of the video.
A series of letters made in a sketch which improved my understanding of typography.
A photograph taken of an area in North Greenwich which helped me understand the type of lighting and environment I may want in parts of the video.
An image of the storyboard used to plan the type of shots and edits I would make for the outcome.
