Explain how your individual role related to the work of other team members.
My role was to create a series of promotional videos that would be used by Lost and Found, which would act as an invite to the expo as well as explanation for the brand's aims and service. These would be shown on a screen in the expo, surrounded by the work of the other members. In order to properly give an invite, it was necessary to display a poster, made by the 2D designer of the group, which featured prominently in the invitational videos. The title and slogan, shown and said out loud in the videos, was made as a collaborative effort by everyone in the group. The 2D designer also was used as an actor in the third promotional video, improvising some of the lines made in my script, that explained the brand and its aims. The script was based on ideas discussed by the whole group, which outlined the audience, tone of voice and purpose of Lost and Found.
How successful was the outcome in relation to the brief?
The outcome was mostly successful in relation to the brief, using equipment like cameras and microphones, handmade props like the flyer seen in the invitational videos, featuring a main actor, covering various locations, and had to be altered accordingly when things didn't go as planned. Controlling the focus of the lens before zooming in was used for a transition in one of the videos, various camera angles were taken to show the poster being held up, and areas of different lighting was used to show the invitation in a wide range of environments. All of this was edited together to show the poster slowly coming closer to camera with each shot until the words could be read, ultimately transitioning to the image and text within the invitation letter itself. The third video, whilst edited, still allows the actor longer stretches of time to explain the purpose of Lost and Found, not interrupting with unneccessary footage, but making sure to highlight the logo and slogan towards the end.
What aspects of your work were successful and why is this?
One aspect of my work that was successful was the way the tone and image of Lost of Found was established. To help create a serene atmosphere in the promotional video, background music was added. This helped differentiate Lost and Found from more serious organisations and allows the viewers to feel more comfortable and calmer when watching the video. The lack of dialogue, narration or text explaining the exact meaning of the video generates curiosity and intrigue towards its contents, making it stand out as more avant garde, suggesting that this is a core part of the identity of Lost and Found. The third more informational style video, shows that Lost and Found doesn’t take itself too seriously but also establishes that it exists for a good cause, using a more familiar handheld approach to in the filming. This style of video is unconventional for a promo like this, but more relatable to an audience used to taking videos on their phones themselves, letting them see the person speaking to them and promoting the brand rather than just hearing them narrate in the background of stock footage.
What aspects of your work were you not happy with and why is this?
An aspect of the work I was not happy with was the lack of the use of footage on the train, this is because it was intended to be the location for one of the final shots. The audio was also not of high quality due to the wind at the time.
What did you find challenging or difficult and why?
Running and recording at the same time was difficult, as well as keeping the camera steady and on the actor took a lot of concentration and physical effort.
How did your planning work out? Did you stick to your schedule? How might you improve your current methods of planning and time management?
Two of the locations, the train station and the O2, were not avaliable to film at, so we had to film near the River Thames. Next time I might plan with more potential locations in mind.
What knowledge and skills have you gained?
How to use a camera and microphone as well as manage footage.
What knowledge and skills might you use again, how?
Editing, as well as the use of camera. I would do this when editing films and videos in the future.
Picture taken of one of the locations that ended up being used in one of the shots found in the invitation video.
Some of the editing process of the third video.
Some of the edits made on the second, invitational video.
A draft of the rough script used for the final video.
